Car sharing has fast become highly attractive. In 2020 alone, Amsterdam issued 700 car sharing permits and installed 600 public charging points for shared electric cars. A new car sharing permit now also allows drivers to park and leave their shared cars for pickup in certain designated areas.
Many shared cars
As a municipality, we lead by example in sharing our own fleet of vehicles. We also work closely with car sharing services. And it’s working. In fact, this prize goes out to all local car sharing businesses; together they provide a great and diverse range of options.
City spaces shrinking
Our city lacks space. Amsterdam is growing rapidly and, with it, so is the number of bicycles, scooters and cars. To avoid future gridlock, we must ensure there are fewer cars and other vehicles in the street. Car sharing helps tremendously in achieving this.
Many advantages
Car sharing has many advantages. It provides flexibility. Users become more conscious in choices about whether to ride a bike, take public transportation or drive. They also save money since cars are often expensive. And there are fewer worries when it comes to parking – leaving the streets with more open space.
Growth
Amsterdam has proved to have the best policies and largest growth in car sharing.
Meanwhile, the Autodeel Award 2020 in the category of Best Small Municipality went to Schouwen-Duiveland and the award in the category for Best Initiative went to Made (MyWheels & Amsterdam Delen Elektrisch). Another Amsterdam undertaking, Made is responsible for the city’s large increase in shared cars.
Natuur & Milieu (‘Nature & Environment’) presented the annual Autodeel Awards for the fifth time, together with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
