Happy Peanut Butter Lovers Day

Monday, March 1 is National Peanut Butter Lovers Day!

Start your week off great by indulging in one of America’s most loved spreads: peanut butter!

More than $4 billion spent on peanut butter purchases contributes to the GDP of the U.S. every year.

Whether you prefer to eat it in your favorite candy or with fruit, the opportunities are endless when it comes to peanut butter.

Gather friends and family to make homemade peanut butter fudge or hit the shelves of your local grocery store to take advantage of all the peanut-buttery Easter candy that’s recently appeared.

However, that’s a national day not everyone can participate in. About 6 million Americans are allergic to peanuts, according to Food Allergy & Research Education.

It’s prevalent enough that one Myrtle Beach bakery actually based their whole concept around it.

Nicole Romano got the idea to make You Eat I Bake in The Market Common an entirely nut-free bakery after so many of her early customers had allergies.

Romano says you can substitute sunflower butter for peanut butter in just about any recipe. She says many customers can’t even taste the difference between the two.

“Some people have never heard of it,” Romano said. “There’s some kids who won’t even go near it because it looks like peanut butter and they’re so afraid because they’ve grown up with the peanut allergy and they know not to have it.”
