Twitter Sets Its Eyes On Enabling Bitcoin Tips

Popular social media app, Twitter, looks set to enable users to tip each other Bitcoin. Indications of the new payment option emerged after software code for that feature was sighted in the Twitter app’s latest update.

On August 31, MacRumors––a website that covers Apple-related news––reported that the Bitcoin-tip code was spotted in a Twitter beta release for iOS devices:

“Twitter’s latest beta update introduces support for providing content creators with Bitcoin tips… Code in the beta suggests that Twitter is in the process of rolling it out”, the report stated.

Also seen in the beta update is a tutorial on how tweeters can set up their Twitter accounts to receive bitcoin tips and suggestions of custodial/non-custodial bitcoin wallets to use.

The Twitter tip jar is a feature designed to make it easy to donate to a cause. Before the tip jar was introduced, Twitter users had to put a fiat/crypto receiving address on their profile or tweet when soliciting financial support. Twitter tip jar seeks to change all that by making tips/donations as convenient as clicking a button.

Presently, Twitter Tip Jar supports tips for the following payment services: Bandcamp, Cash App, Patreon, PayPal, and Venmo. Adding bitcoin support to the tip jar would be a massive development for lovers of crypto. The news also comes as Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, is preparing a Bitcoin exchange.

How Soon Shall We See It?

The Bitcoin tip jar is not yet activated. However, the fact that codes for it have been programmed into the app is a vital sign that it won’t be long in coming.

Earlier this year, Twitter’s CEO Jack Dorsey gave a hint that a Bitcoin-tip feature is in his plans. During a shareholders’ conference call on July 22, Dorsey was asked how he sees Bitcoin getting more integrated into Twitter. In response, he said:

“I think this is a big part of our future. And it really opens up entirely new use cases for everyone on Twitter.”

Dorsey has not hidden his passion for Bitcoin and commitment to its adoption. At the 2021 Bitcoin Conference in Miami, Jack said that he considers working on Bitcoin one of his life’s most important endeavors. He believes that the Internet needs a native currency and that Bitcoin is the best-positioned candidate for that role.
